His research is focused in contemporary transitional China, including population policies, evolution of childbearing culture, uxorilocal marriages, aging and old-age support, rural-urban migrants and social networks, gender and reproductive health, girl child survival and intervention strategy and policy, gender imbalance and sustainable social development, children’s birth registration, farmer’s livelihood strategy and environmental change. He is also a leading consultant for the National Office of Care for Girls Campaign China; a member of the Advisory Committee for the National Population and Family Planning Commission of China; a member of the Social Sciences Committee of Ministry of Education of China; and a consultant to Shaanxi Provincial Government, China. He has published many papers and books both in English and in Chinese.
