Dr. Reiner researches haptics (non-verbal communication by touch), specifically, haptics in a virtual environment, the role of touch in manual expertise (especially surgical expertise and acquisition of surgical skills in virtual environments), simulated environments for evaluations of manual expertise, physics learning, simulations in virtual environments, thought experiments, and sensory experience.
